Why should I have vermiculite removed from my attic?
Used for insulation in residential attics, vermiculite has been found to contain dangerous asbestos particles. Much of the mineral vermiculite sold in the US and Canada came from a mine that also contained asbestos and has been proven to be contaminated. The mineral was used in the production of insulation due to its heat resistant and insulating properties.
Lung scarring, cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis are all fatal or debilitating diseases that have been connected to asbestos fibres.
Vermiculite and attic asbestos removal should only be conducted by a reputable company in accordance with Ontario regulation 278/05.

Why does asbestos need to be removed?
Exposure to asbestos has been linked to lung scarring, cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis. Commonly used for insulation and in attics, around pipes, heating and ventilation systems and in tiling, asbestos was used in buildings until about 1987. Properties built before this time that are suspected to contain asbestos should be inspected and an asbestos removal/abatement program followed.
Asbestos removal must be conducted by qualified experts as the removal process can expose harmful asbestos fibres. Residents, workers and visitors must be protected from exposure. Asbestos abatement professionals are certified and able to ensure adequate protection and efficient removal.
